Teach students about the word of the week (MOTIVATED) and discuss various communication styles (ASSERTIVE, SARCASTIC) with this neurodiversity-affirming lesson plan!

This resource includes 22 pages that can be presented digitally or printed, and it is the perfect tool for teaching students about social/emotional vocabulary, communication styles, analyzing their own communication, and problem solving through communication breakdowns and social scenarios!

The lesson plan follows the format of...

  • Word of the week: MOTIVATED - students discuss the word and review a handful of scenarios to determine whether the individual was being motivated or not motivated.

  • A Communication Situation: Review communication styles, including assertive, sarcastic, info-dumping, and figurative; analyze the successfulness of a communication scenario, and problem solve through a communication breakdown that occurred as a result of opposing styles (sarcastic vs. assertive).

  • A Problem Solving Situation: Discuss a functional problem solving scenario, weigh the pros and cons of different solutions using a graphic organizer, and decide which solution is the best choice for solving the problem.

  • A Self Reflection: Apply new knowledge to analyze students' own experiences related to the word of the week and the communication styles discussed.

This resource is perfect for speech-language pathologists, special educators, and communication partners who work with secondary students. It is formatted for printing as a visual lesson guide OR displaying as a digital pdf.
